How it's calculated

Volume = length × width × thickness (or π r² × height × count for columns), converted to consistent units, then increased by your waste allowance. Bag counts use a consistent yield of ≈ 2,130 kg of mix per m³ of placed concrete — that's the standard 0.60 ft³ per 80 lb bag, 0.45 ft³ per 60 lb, 0.30 ft³ per 40 lb, and ~11.7 L per 25 kg bag. Counts always round up.

Concrete estimating without the guesswork

Concrete math is simple geometry with two traps: mixed units and running short. This calculator handles all three common pours — slabs, footings/trenches and round columns — in one place, takes feet-and-inches or metres-and-centimetres directly (no converting 4 inches to 0.333 ft by hand), and shows the answer three ways at once: cubic feet, cubic yards and cubic metres, since suppliers quote in different units.

The classic example: a 10 × 10 ft patio at 4 inches thick is 33.3 ft³ ≈ 1.23 yd³ of concrete — about 56 bags of 80 lb mix before waste, or 62 bags with the recommended 10% allowance. Bump the thickness to 6 inches (driveway spec) and you need half again as much: 1.85 yd³.

Always order more than the geometry says. Subgrades are never perfectly flat, forms bow slightly, some mix stays in the mixer and wheelbarrow, and a slab poured thin because you ran out is a slab that cracks. The industry habit is 5-10% extra — the waste field defaults to 10% and the result card shows both the net and waste-adjusted numbers so nothing is hidden.

Bags or a truck? Bagged mix makes sense up to roughly 1 cubic yard (about 45 × 80 lb bags — a full weekend of mixing). Beyond that, ready-mix delivery wins on both labor and consistency; a typical truck carries up to about 10 yd³ (7.6 m³). The calculator flags when your pour crosses into truck territory. Note that many suppliers charge a short-load fee for small deliveries, so mid-size pours (1-2 yd³) are worth pricing both ways — the optional price field accepts per-bag or per-volume rates.

One more distinction worth knowing: concrete is the cement-sand-gravel mix you pour; cement is just the grey powder that glues it together. Bagged "concrete mix" already contains the aggregate — you only add water.

How much concrete do I need for a 10x10 slab?
At 4 inches thick, a 10 x 10 ft slab needs 1.23 cubic yards (0.94 m3) - about 56 bags of 80 lb mix, or 62 bags including a 10% waste allowance. At 6 inches thick it's 1.85 yd3, roughly 84 bags.
How many 80 lb bags make a yard of concrete?
45 bags. An 80 lb bag yields 0.60 cubic feet, and a cubic yard is 27 cubic feet: 27 / 0.6 = 45. For 60 lb bags it's 60, and for 40 lb bags 90.
How thick should a concrete slab be?
Common practice: 4 inches (10 cm) for patios, walkways and shed bases; 5-6 inches (12-15 cm) for driveways and garage floors that carry vehicles. Thicker slabs with reinforcement are used for heavy loads.
Why add a waste percentage?
Uneven ground absorbs more concrete than the plan shows, forms flex, and some mix is always lost in mixing and transport. Ordering 5-10% extra is standard practice - running short mid-pour creates a cold joint and a weaker slab.
Should I use bags or order ready-mix?
Under about 1 cubic yard, bags are practical. Above that, ready-mix delivery is usually cheaper per yard, far less labor, and more consistent - one truck holds up to ~10 yd3. For 1-2 yd3, compare both: small ready-mix orders often carry a short-load fee.
What's the difference between concrete and cement?
Cement is the binding powder; concrete is cement mixed with sand, gravel and water. Bagged 'concrete mix' contains everything except water. You'd only buy pure cement for making your own mix or for mortar work.
How much water per bag of concrete mix?
Roughly 2.8-3 quarts (2.7-2.8 L) per 80 lb bag - always follow the bag's printed ratio. Too much water makes mixing easier but permanently weakens the concrete and increases cracking.
How long does concrete take to cure?
It sets in hours, supports foot traffic in 24-48 hours, takes vehicle weight after about 7 days, and reaches its rated strength at 28 days. Keeping it damp for the first week (curing) significantly improves final strength.
