GTA 6 download time

Preload opens November 12, 2026. Enter your internet speed to see how long GTA 6 will take — and exactly when it finishes if you start now.

Rockstar hasn't confirmed the size. 180 GB is a working estimate for a flagship 2026 open-world title — edit freely, and this default updates the moment the real number is published.

Downloads almost never run at the full advertised plan speed — Wi-Fi, other devices and busy game servers all take a cut.

The lesson from every big launch: preload during the quiet week, not on launch night when millions hit the same servers.

Why the November 12 preload window matters

Rockstar opens preloading a full week before launch — an unusually generous window that itself hints at a very large install. If you pre-ordered digitally (or redeem the download code from a boxed copy), your console can quietly pull the whole game in the background days early, and you play the second it unlocks on November 19. Skip the preload and you're downloading on the busiest night in gaming history.

Mbps is not MB/s — the classic trap

Internet plans are sold in megabits per second; file sizes are measured in gigabytes. Divide your plan speed by 8 to get real transfer speed: a 100 Mbps plan moves at most 12.5 MB per second, so 180 GB takes about four hours in a perfect world — and closer to five and a half at a typical 75% real-world efficiency. That's the math this calculator does for you, congestion included.

Speed up the download

Use a wired ethernet connection if you can, pause other downloads and streaming in the house, and let the console work in rest mode (PS5) or with instant-on enabled (Xbox) overnight. None of it raises your plan speed, but it pushes your efficiency toward the top of the range.

Frequently asked questions

How big is the GTA 6 download?
Rockstar hasn't confirmed the install size yet. The week-long preload window suggests it's large; this calculator defaults to a 180 GB working estimate that you can edit, and the default will be updated the moment Rockstar publishes the real figure.
How long does 180 GB take to download on 100 Mbps?
About 4 hours at full speed, and closer to 5½ hours at a realistic 75% efficiency. On launch night with congested servers it can stretch to 8 hours — which is exactly why preloading on November 12 matters.
When can I preload GTA 6?
November 12, 2026 — one week before launch — for digital pre-orders. Boxed copies contain a download code and reach retail the same day, so physical buyers can preload too.
Why is my download slower than my internet plan?
Plan speeds are a ceiling, not a promise. Wi-Fi losses, other devices, console download limits and busy game servers typically cut real throughput to 50–90% of the advertised rate. The efficiency setting in this calculator models that.
Can my console download GTA 6 while it's off?
Effectively yes: PS5 downloads in Rest Mode and Xbox downloads with the Instant-on power setting. Start the preload before bed on November 12 and it's done by morning on most connections.
What's the difference between Mbps and MB/s?
Mbps is megabits per second (how internet is sold); MB/s is megabytes per second (how files transfer). Divide by 8: a 200 Mbps plan moves at most 25 MB/s.
