What does it actually cost to play GTA 6?

The sticker price of the game — $79.99 Standard or $99.99 Ultimate — is only the whole story if you already own a current-generation console. GTA 6 launches on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S only, so anyone still on a PS4, Xbox One or PC needs hardware first. That swings the real cost from about $86 with tax to well over $900 for a PS5 Pro setup with accessories.

Standard vs Ultimate: is the $20 worth it?

Both editions contain the identical story. The Ultimate Edition adds a set of exclusive vehicles, weapon variants, cosmetic packs, in-game shops and one side mission. Rockstar has confirmed you can upgrade from Standard to Ultimate later for the same $20 difference, so there is no penalty for starting cheap and deciding after reviews land.

Do you need PS Plus or Game Pass Core?

Not on day one. Rockstar describes GTA 6 at launch as a single-player experience, and single-player games do not require an online subscription on either console. If and when an online mode arrives, a subscription will be needed to play it — the calculator lets you include a year of it now if you want the full-picture number.

Frequently asked questions

How much does GTA 6 cost?
The Standard Edition is $79.99 and the Ultimate Edition is $99.99 on both PS5 and Xbox Series X|S. If you also need a console, the total ranges from roughly $480 (Xbox Series S + Standard) to about $850+ (PS5 Pro + Ultimate) before tax.
Do I need PlayStation Plus or Game Pass to play GTA 6?
No. GTA 6 is a single-player experience at launch, and single-player games don't require an online subscription on PS5 or Xbox. A subscription would only matter once an online mode is released.
What is the cheapest way to play GTA 6?
An Xbox Series S ($399.99) plus the Standard Edition ($79.99) is the lowest-cost route — about $480 before tax. If you already own a PS5 or Series X|S, the game itself is your only required cost.
Is the GTA 6 Ultimate Edition worth $20 more?
The story is identical in both editions; Ultimate adds exclusive vehicles, weapon variants, cosmetics, shops and a side mission. You can upgrade from Standard later for the same $20, so there's no penalty for waiting.
Is GTA 6 coming to PC?
Rockstar has not announced a PC version. Historically its console games reached PC 13–19 months after launch (GTA V: 19 months, Red Dead Redemption 2: 13 months), so a 2028 window would fit the pattern — but nothing is confirmed.
Why does the physical edition not include a disc?
The boxed retail version of GTA 6 contains a download code rather than a disc. Digital and physical buyers get the same game and can both preload starting November 12, 2026.
