How the fertile window works

An egg lives for about 24 hours after ovulation, but sperm can wait in the reproductive tract for up to five days. Put together, that creates a roughly six-day fertile window: the five days before ovulation plus ovulation day itself. Conception odds peak on the two days right before and including ovulation — the "best two days" this calculator highlights.

The 14-day rule

Calendar methods lean on one steady fact: the luteal phase — from ovulation to the next period — holds close to 14 days for most people even when cycle length varies. So ovulation is estimated as your cycle length minus 14: day 14 of a 28-day cycle, day 21 of a 35-day one. Cycle-length differences come almost entirely from the first half of the cycle.

What a calendar can't see

This is arithmetic on averages. Stress, illness, travel and natural variation shift ovulation, and irregular cycles stretch the error bars quickly. For precision, pair the calendar with body signals: ovulation predictor kits (which catch the LH surge ~24–36 hours ahead), basal body temperature, or cervical-mucus changes.

After ovulation: implantation and testing

If fertilisation happens, implantation typically follows 6–12 days after ovulation — the window shown in your results. Pregnancy tests measure hCG, which only starts rising after implantation, so testing before your missed period invites false negatives. The date shown is the earliest day a result is genuinely informative.

Can I use this as contraception?
