kelvin to celsius converter

Celsius is kelvin minus 273.15 — same size of degree, different zero. This converts both ways, shows Fahrenheit too, and lists the landmark temperatures.

Same degree, different zero

The kelvin and the Celsius degree are the same size; the scales differ only in where zero sits. Celsius puts 0 at the freezing point of water, kelvin puts 0 at absolute zero, the point at which molecular motion is minimal. That gap is exactly 273.15, so converting is a subtraction or an addition and nothing else. Kelvin has no degree sign — it is written 300 K, not 300 °K.

°C = K − 273.15   |   K = °C + 273.15   |   °F = °C × 9/5 + 32

Where kelvin shows up

Kelvin is the scientific temperature scale: gas laws, blackbody radiation and thermodynamics all need a true zero, because doubling the temperature only means something when zero really is zero. Colour temperature of light bulbs (2,700 K warm white, 6,500 K daylight) and the surface of the Sun (about 5,772 K) are the two places most people meet it outside a lab. Room temperature is roughly 293–298 K.

Landmarks

Absolute zero is 0 K = −273.15 °C. Liquid nitrogen boils at 77 K (−196 °C). Water freezes at 273.15 K and boils at 373.15 K at sea level. Body temperature is 310.15 K. The Rankine row is the Fahrenheit-sized absolute scale used in some US engineering work: °R = K × 1.8.

Frequently asked questions

What is 300 K in Celsius?
300 K is 26.85 °C (80.33 °F) — a warm room. Subtract 273.15 from any kelvin figure to get Celsius.
What is 0 kelvin in Celsius?
0 K is absolute zero: −273.15 °C or −459.67 °F. No temperature can be lower.
How do I convert Celsius to kelvin?
Add 273.15. Water's boiling point of 100 °C is 373.15 K; body temperature of 37 °C is 310.15 K.
Why is there no degree symbol on kelvin?
Since 1967 the kelvin is a unit in its own right, not a degree on a scale, so it is written 300 K. Celsius and Fahrenheit keep the degree sign.
What is room temperature in kelvin?
About 293 to 298 K (20 to 25 °C). Many physics problems use 298.15 K, which is exactly 25 °C.
