How the split works

Tip is calculated on the pre-tax bill (the etiquette-standard method), then bill, tax and tip are summed and divided evenly. With round-up enabled, each share is bumped to the next whole amount — the small overage typically becomes extra tip, and nobody is fishing for coins.

Even vs. itemized splits

Even splitting is fastest and fair when everyone ordered similarly. When one person had three cocktails and another had water, an even split penalizes the light spender — in that case, have each person pay their items plus an even share of tax and tip. A useful compromise for big groups: split evenly, but pull obvious outliers (bottles of wine, an extra entrée) onto the person who ordered them first.

The end-of-meal ritual, solved: bill, tax, tip percentage, headcount — and everyone's share appears instantly. The one-tap tip presets cover standard US tipping (15–20% at restaurants), and the round-up toggle keeps cash payments simple. If you only need the tip math without splitting, our tip calculator is the focused version; for splitting recurring costs like rent or utilities by income, a percentage calculator handles proportional shares.

Frequently asked questions

Should the tip be calculated before or after tax?
Etiquette guides say pre-tax, and that's what this calculator does. Tipping on the after-tax total is also common and slightly more generous — about $0.80–$1.80 more per $100 depending on your tax rate.
How do you split a bill unevenly?
Have each person cover their own items, then split tax and tip evenly (or proportionally to what each spent). This calculator handles the even portion; for proportional shares, divide each person's subtotal by the full subtotal and apply that fraction to tax and tip.
What's a normal tip in the US?
15–20% at sit-down restaurants, with 18% a common default. Counter service is discretionary (0–10%), and delivery typically 10–15% with a minimum of a few dollars.
Does rounding up shortchange the server?
The opposite — rounding each share up means the group pays slightly more than the exact total, and the difference usually goes to the tip.
Can I split between just 2 people?
Yes — set people to 2 (or anywhere from 1 to 50). With 1 person it works as a plain tip-and-total calculator.
