Running Pace and Race Splits Explained

Pace, speed and finish time are three views of one equation. Once you can move between them, every training and race-day question becomes a lookup rather than a guess.

Pace, speed and time are one equation

Pace is time per unit of distance. Speed is distance per unit of time. They are the same relationship read from opposite ends, which is why a pace chart can answer almost every question a runner has.

Pace = total time ÷ distance
Finish time = pace × distance
min/km = min/mile ÷ 1.609344

The one piece people get wrong is the sexagesimal arithmetic. A 7:30 pace is 7.5 minutes, not 7.30 — converting to decimal minutes before multiplying avoids a whole class of errors.

What each pace produces

Standard race distances: 5K is 3.107 miles, 10K is 6.214, a half marathon is 13.109 and a marathon is 26.219.

Working backwards from a goal

Most people arrive with a target time rather than a target pace. Divide the goal by the distance.

Notice that a two-hour half and a four-hour marathon need exactly the same pace. That is a useful reality check: doubling the distance at the same pace is a much larger step than the arithmetic suggests, which is why marathon goal paces are normally set well slower than half-marathon race pace.

Even splits, and why the second half costs more

An even split means every mile takes the same time. A negative split means the second half is faster than the first. Almost every distance record has been set on a flat or slightly negative split, and almost every recreational blow-up starts with a first mile run 30–60 seconds too fast.

Why your watch and the course disagree

Certified courses are measured along the shortest legal running line — cutting every tangent, hugging every corner. Nobody actually runs that line. Add GPS drift under trees and between buildings and a watch will typically read 1–2% long over a marathon, which is a quarter to half a mile.

The practical consequence: pace your race against the mile or kilometre markers on the course, not against the watch’s live pace field. If you set out to run 9:09 per mile according to a watch measuring 1.5% long, you will cross the line several minutes behind the goal you thought you were holding.

Distances themselves are fixed by definition — the marathon has been 42.195 km (26 miles 385 yards) since it was standardised, and the half is exactly half that.

How do I calculate my running pace?
Divide total time by distance. Convert the time to decimal minutes first — a 46:30 10K is 46.5 minutes, and 46.5 divided by 6.214 miles gives roughly a 7:29 mile pace.
How do I convert minutes per mile to minutes per kilometre?
Divide by 1.609344. An 8:00 mile is 4:58 per kilometre. Going the other way, multiply the kilometre pace by 1.609344.
What pace do I need for a four-hour marathon?
About 9:09 per mile, or 5:41 per kilometre, held for the full 26.219 miles. That is the same pace as a two-hour half marathon, which is why most runners target a marathon pace noticeably slower than their half pace.
Why does my GPS watch show more distance than the race?
Courses are measured along the shortest legal line around every corner, which nobody runs, and GPS adds drift near trees and buildings. A watch commonly reads 1 to 2 percent long, so pace against the course markers instead.
Should I run even splits or start fast?
Even or slightly negative splits are more reliable for almost everyone. Time banked in the first few miles is typically paid back at several times the rate in the closing miles, and the fast start is the most common cause of a late collapse.
