How Many Squares of Shingles Do I Need?
The one number that trips up every first roof estimate: the area of a roof is not the area of the house underneath it. A 1,200 sq ft footprint under a 6/12 pitch is 1,342 sq ft of actual roof, and ordering for the footprint leaves you a square and a half short.
The unit
Roofing is sold and priced by the square, which is simply 100 square feet of finished roof surface. It exists because roofs are large and awkward numbers, and because a square is roughly what one worker covers in a shift.
Shingles come in bundles, and for standard three-tab and most architectural laminates three bundles make one square. Heavier designer and premium laminates can run four or even five bundles per square, so check the wrapper rather than assuming.
Why the footprint is not the answer
A pitched roof is the hypotenuse of a triangle whose base is the footprint. The steeper the roof, the more surface is hiding above that base. Pitch is written as rise over a 12-inch run, so a 6/12 roof climbs 6 inches for every 12 it travels horizontally.
The correction is a pitch multiplier, and it comes straight from Pythagoras: multiplier = √(1 + (rise ÷ 12)²).

Anything at 8/12 or steeper generally needs staging or roof jacks, which is why labour quotes climb sharply past that point even though the material only rises 20%.
A worked estimate
A simple gable roof over a 40 ft × 30 ft house at 6/12 pitch, with a 1 ft overhang all round:

Note the overhang. Measuring the walls instead of the eaves is the second most common way to come up short.
Waste factor
Waste is not optional padding — it is the material consumed by cutting shingles to fit at hips, valleys, rakes and around penetrations. The right allowance depends on how complicated the roof is:
- 10% — simple gable, two planes, no valleys.
- 12–15% — a hip roof, or a gable with dormers and a chimney.
- 15–20% — multiple intersecting planes, several valleys, turrets or complex cut-ups.
Everything else the square count misses
Shingles are typically around half the material bill. Per square you will also need:

The nail figure assumes the standard four-nail pattern, about 320 nails per square. High-wind zones require six nails per shingle, which pushes it to roughly 480 and adds a pound per square.
Before you order
Two code points worth checking. Most jurisdictions following the IRC cap asphalt shingles at two layers — if there are already two up there, the job includes a tear-off and you should budget disposal. And low slopes below 2/12 are outside the range asphalt shingles are rated for at all; those need a membrane system instead.
To get pitch without climbing: hold a level against a rafter in the attic, mark 12 inches along it, and measure straight up to the underside of the roof deck. That vertical measurement in inches is your rise.
